A 1936 design in response to a British specification for a Short Take-Off and Land Observation / Reconnaissance
aircraft. It proved to be of limited use in the far more technical combat of the Second World War, but did serve in
some specialized roles. Otherwise, this was a very successful design, being flown by more than a dozen different
air forces.
On May 25, 1938 Lt.Col. Basko was in England to oversee the acceptance of the Hawker Hind aircraft recently
purchased by the Latvian Air Force. While there he also took the controls of a Westland Lysander and logged almost two hours of flight time.
It is unknown if there was any serious consideration given to acquiring the Lysander for the Latvian military, or if he
simply availed himself of the opportunity to try out a new aircraft type.
